MSCP 306B at Sembawang

For my 2nd Industry Studio Project, we were tasked to redesign a residential multi-story carpark, located at Sembawang. During this project, I managed to pick up 3D modeling using Sketch-Up with Enscape and was able to complete my first larger scale digital model. I approached the design brief primarily by addressing the target demographic of the place and addressing their needs as well as creating spaces that can be used by all ages. This is done in a few ways, such as:

Conducting a thorough site analysis and understanding that the neighboring blocks consist of a majority of older residents. We also noticed that the number of younger families are starting to move into the neighborhood.

 

From this, we can create opportunities to allow the older generation to feel a sense of nostalgia as most of them came from Kampong Sembawang, which had to be removed to form HDBS. We can also allow the younger generation to learn more about the spaces they are living in by providing an educational opportunity in the park that teaches about kampong living in the past.

 

This is achieved by allowing the design to mimic the rainforest of old Singapore by having features like stilts on the upper deck that act as tall timber trees. The shelters and greenery along the walls also act as a canopy that is present in Kampong Sembwang in the past. The river pond also resembles the shores of the beach that make up the livelihood of residents at Kampong Sembawang.
